Back in December 2010, I had the opportunity to attend the free Wisconsin Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) Conference. Lodging, lunch, and breakfast were provided for those who traveled more than 50 miles, which included me, and was sponsored through state funding.
I decided to go to the 3-day event after e-mailing the conference organizers to see if it would be appropriate for me to be there as a medical librarian with an interest in disaster information–given that I have no direct relationships with any VOAD member organizations. In this hands-on Spotlight on NLM Resources session, attendees will learn about the Drug Information Portal and the MedlinePlus Drugs & Supplements Database. The Drug Information Portal covers over 17,000 drugs from when they are in clinical trials through their U.S. FDA approval period to when they are available in the marketplace. The MedlinePlus Drugs & Supplements is a part of the MedlinePlus suite of consumer health resources. Data comes from the over 1000 brand name and generic prescription and over the counter drugs provided by the American Society of Health Pharmacists and the evidence-based Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database that includes 100 herbs and supplements monographs.
