One dose of a monovalent vaccine and either one or two doses of a monovalent adjuvanted vaccine for the pandemic influenza A(H1N1) virus showed safety and effectiveness, according to preliminary data from several studies published online Sept. 10 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Respiratory disease in patients infected with the pandemic influenza A(H1N1) virus or ill from other causes appears to be declining in tropical Central America, but it remains on the rise in other regions, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa of the (PAHO) said in a Webcast on Sept. 9.
