Future Plans of the 2008-2009 NLM Associate Fellows

The National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world’s largest medical library (www.nlm.nih.gov), in Bethesda, Maryland, is pleased to announce the future plans of its 2008-2009 class of Associate Fellows. The Associate Fellowship Program (AFP) is a one-year postgraduate training program with an optional second year. This competitive program is designed to provide a broad foundation in health sciences information services and to prepare librarians for future leadership roles in health sciences libraries and health services research. In fact, many leaders in those fields, in the US and Canada, point to the Associate Fellowship Program as their career “launch pad.” This talented and diverse group will end its first year at NLM in August 2009. Dr. Francis S. Collins, former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, was confirmed by the Senate Aug. 4 as the director of the National Institutes of Health.

For Mild Preeclampsia, Labor Induction Improves Maternal Outcomes

Labor induction results in fewer poor maternal outcomes than does expectant monitoring in women who have gestational hypertension or mild preeclampsia after 37 weeks gestation, according to a report published online Aug. 4 in the Lancet.

Conclusion:
The clinical presentation of GIST is variable but the most usual symptoms include the presence of a mass or bleeding. Surgical resection of the local disease is the mainstay therapy. However, therapeutic agents, such as Imatinib have now been approved for the treatment of advanced GISTs and others such as everolimus, rapamycin, heat shock protein 90 and IGF are in trial stage demonstrate promising results for the management of GISTs. FDA Approves Oral, Antidiabetic Drug Saxagliptin

The Food and Drug Administration approved on July 31 saxagliptin, an oral, once-daily drug for treating type 2 diabetes in adults. The indication says that saxagliptin is approved as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, said an agency spokeswoman.
