GAITHERSBURG, Md. (EGMN) At a May 28 meeting, the Food and Drug Administrations Anesthesiology and Respiratory Therapy Devices Advisory Panel voted 8 to 2 to recommend conditional approval of a computer-assisted device that would enable gastroenterologists to administer the sedative propofol to patients during colonoscopy or esophagogastroduodenoscopy procedures, without an anesthesiologist present.

While at the Medical Library Association Conference, I had the opportunity to hear from librarians doing outreach:
Diane Schwartz works with the Somali Bantu Project in Buffalo New York. You can learn about their amazing work with mothers and children at http://www.bantuhealth.org/ The Project Materials link includes a guide they created and the “Listen and Learn” link inlcudes audio files in Maay Maay and Kizigua languages.
Sabrina Kurtz-Ross spoke about the Medical Library Association’s Health Information Literacy Curriculum which includes a Powerpoint slide show, a detailed script, notes for presenters, background reading, and tips for librarians, including and ideas quotes from the pilot site librarians that tested the curriculum.

Program Relieves Comorbid Depression and Chronic Pain

A program of optimized antidepressant therapy and pain self-management in patients with comorbid depression and chronic pain produced substantial and sustained reductions in disability and depression and pain severity, according to a report in the May 27 issue of JAMA.

Bevacizumab Increased Risk of GI Perforation, Meta-Analysis Showed

The cancer drug bevacizumab appears to significantly increase the risk of potentially life-threatening gastrointestinal perforations, based on the findings of a meta-analysis of 17 randomized clinical trials, thereby bolstering the black box label warning about these adverse events.

This week it was announced at the 2009 annual meeting of the Medical Library Association in Honolulu, Hawaii that PubMed will undergo a redesign of the interface. The goals of PubMed Redesign 2009 are to make PubMed easier to use, simplify the interface, refresh the look, better organize the text on the screen, and promote scientific discovery. We anticipate the redesign to be ready in late summer 2009. More specifics about the release date and tips for transitioning will be published here when that information is available.
