The World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert level to 5, indicating sustained human-to-human transmission of the virus in at least two countries (Mexico and the United States) in one WHO region. The change was announced on April 29.

Concern about swine influenza in the United States has grown since yesterday, now that an additional case has been identified in California bringing the U.S. total to eight and seven more have been confirmed in Mexico, with many more suspected.
